FAQ

How long does a Wireless connection take to install?

Deployment lead times vary. If your site survey is successful and there is a line of sight the lead time is approximately 1hr – 4hrs. If there is a high site leasing requirement the lead time can be up to 5days.

What is the difference between Wireless connectivity and WiFi?

What does uncapped Internet mean?

Uncapped means you have an unlimited amount of data available to consume. There is no overall limit to how much data you can use. It is important to note that some Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) have a monthly “threshold” value. Although you can still consume data past the threshold, your line speed may be affected through throttling or shaping policies. Consider the vehicle example below. The only difference is that the petrol tank contains an unlimited amount of petrol (Uncapped), effectively meaning that it can drive forever. However, once a certain distance (threshold) has been reached, the vehicles speed will be reduced.

A capped connection means you have a limited amount of data available to consume over a specific time period (usually a month). Your capped amount is not the same as your line speed. Your line speed determines how quickly a webpage will load or how quickly a file will download whereas your “capped” value determines how many files you can download. Imagine a vehicle – the size of the engine (line speed) determines how fast the vehicle will travel and the size of the petrol tank (capped value) determines how far the vehicle can travel.

What does uncontended Internet mean?

Uncontended means that you get a fixed connection speed regardless of how many other companies share the pipe. Contended means that speeds are not fixed and will fluctuate depending on how many companies or people are connecting

What is VoIP?

VoIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, which by itself means voice over the internet. It’s a technology that delivers voice communication and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.

To place calls via VoIP, a user will need a software based sip phone program OR a hardware based VoIP phone. Phone calls can be made to anywhere and to anyone: Both to VoIP numbers as well as PSTN phone numbers.

Do I need broadband/internet connection?

Yes, to use VoIP you need an internet connection. It must be stable and with enough bandwidth to traffic the amount of desired simultaneous calls.

Can I keep my phone number and use VoIP?

All South African Geographic numbers can be ported (021, 011, 010, 022, 031, etc.)

What type of connection is recommended for VoIP?

Recommended Connections
We insists on a VoIP optimised, voice-only connection that is dedicated solely for voice with enough bandwidth to support the number of simultaneous calls to be had. Some connections recommended:
– Business-class Fibre
– LTE
– WiMax

Can I take my phone number with me when I travel?

Yes, many business VoIP customers install a soft phone on their laptops and/or smartphones so that they can make and receive calls no matter where they are.

How Do IP Surveillance Cameras Work?

In a traditional security system, data is transmitted through a cable to a DVR (digital video recorder). With an IP camera, the Internet is used to transmit digital video. The unit contains everything it needs to do this. It’s connected to your network much like other external IT equipment like a printer. To store video, your IP camera may contain storage in-unit or it may transmit video to a device also connected to the network to be stored, also known as a network video recorder (NVR). Digital cameras and IP cameras capture images the same way, although the transmission method is different. Your quality won’t be compromised with an IP camera—in fact, the resolution is better.

What Type of Network Connection Will I Need for an IP Camera Surveillance System?

You can use either a physical router for your network (wired) or a WiFi connection (wireless). Wired networks tend to be more secure and reliable, although WiFi is easier, it leads to the increased need for security. Surveillance Secure can help you encrypt these networks and customize a wireless network to minimize chances of any problems with a WiFi setup. You may also choose to use a cellular network, which tends to be safer than WiFi, but also slower. Surveillance Secure can discuss your options with you to determine which one would be best for your custom setup and security needs.

What Components Will I Need for This System?

For an IP surveillance system, you’ll need the actual IP cameras, an NVR or other type of storage system, accessories such as a microphones and speakers generally will come built into the cameras so additional parts will not be required. At Surveillance Secure, we can help determine your needs and set you up with the best equipment for your budget.

How does motion detection work? Through the camera or software?

Motion detection is a software-based feature. When pixels in the image change, the software alerts the system to begin recording. You can set the sensitivity on most DVR/NVRs so that drive space isn’t wasted on every stray cat that wanders through the property.

Can I view live and recorded video locally?

Yes. Onsite monitoring of both live and recorded video is possible.
